In this post you’ll learn the difference between a WordPress website and a custom coded website, and how to decide which one is right for your business. I’ll keep it simple and no technical knowledge is needed to understand it.
If you are planning to make a website for your business, then this is the first question that comes in mind. Someone will say “just make it in WordPress, its cheap and fast”, and someone else will say “no, get a custom website, its more professional”. Both are not completely wrong. It depends on what your business needs.
I have worked with both types, so lets understand it step by step.
What we’ll cover in this post.
- What is a WordPress website.
- What is a custom website.
- Cost difference.
- Speed and performance.
- Design and flexibility.
- Security and maintenance.
- Which one should you choose.
What is a WordPress website.
WordPress is a CMS (content management system). It means the base system is already made, you just have to install it, choose a theme (design) and add your content. You don’t need to write code from scratch.
Today a big number of websites on the internet are running on WordPress. Blogs, small business websites, news websites, even some online stores (using WooCommerce plugin).
The best part is you can update the text, images and blog posts by yourself from the admin panel. No need to call the developer for every small change.
What is a custom website.
A custom website is made from scratch by a developer. Means he writes the code using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and a backend language like PHP (or Node.js, Python etc.) according to your requirement.
Nothing is pre-made here. Every page, every button and every feature is made only for your business. If you need some special functionality, like a booking system or a customer dashboard, it can be built exactly the way you want.
Cost difference.
This is the thing most people care about first, so lets talk about it.
WordPress:
- Cost is lower in the beginning.
- Many themes are free or available at a small price.
- Developer can set up the website in few days.
- But some plugins and premium themes have yearly charges.
Custom website:
- Cost is higher in the beginning, because the developer has to spend more time.
- No theme or plugin charges.
- If you need new features later, you have to pay for development again.
So if your budget is small and you want to start quickly, WordPress is the better option. But remember that in long term WordPress can also become costly if you are buying many paid plugins.
Speed and performance.
Here custom website has the advantage. In custom website only the code that is needed is added, nothing extra. Thats why it is generally faster.
In WordPress, speed depends on your theme, plugins and hosting. If you install 20 plugins and a heavy theme, then the website will become slow. I have seen many WordPress websites taking 8 to 10 seconds to open just because of this.
But it doesn’t mean WordPress is always slow. If you use a light theme, few plugins and good hosting, it can run fast too. Just keep it clean.
Design and flexibility.
With WordPress, you are mostly limited by the theme. You can customize colors, fonts and layout up to some level, but if you want something very different then it becomes difficult. Many times your website will look similar to other websites using the same theme.
With custom website, there is no such limit. Design can be made according to your brand, and animations or special effects can be added easily. If you want something unique, then custom is better.
But for most small businesses (like a clinic, a coaching class, a local shop or a service provider), a good WordPress theme is more than enough. They need a clean website with their services, contact details and reviews. They don’t need something very fancy.
Security and maintenance.
This part is often ignored by people.
WordPress is very popular, so hackers also target it more. If you don’t update the WordPress version, theme and plugins regularly, then your website can get hacked. Especially old and nulled (pirated) plugins, please never use them.
To keep a WordPress website safe:
- Update WordPress, theme and plugins regularly.
- Use only trusted plugins.
- Take backup of your website.
- Use a strong password and security plugin.
Custom website is generally less target for such attacks, because its code is not publicly known like WordPress. But it has its own risk. If the developer doesn’t write secure code (like not using prepared statements or not validating user input), then there can be issues like SQL injection. Also you will depend on the developer for every update.
So in both cases maintenance is needed. No website is “make once and forget”.
Quick comparison.
| WordPress | Custom Website | |
| Initial cost | Low | High |
| Time to launch | Few days | Few weeks |
| Editing content | Easy, by yourself | Need developer (unless admin panel is made) |
| Speed | Depends on theme and plugins | Usually faster |
| Design freedom | Limited by theme | Full freedom |
| Special features | Through plugins | Made exactly as needed |
| Maintenance | Regular updates needed | Developer needed for changes |
Which one should you choose.
Choose WordPress if:
- Your budget is limited.
- You want to launch quickly.
- You mainly need a normal business website (home, about, services, contact).
- You want to update content by yourself.
- You want to start a blog.
Choose custom website if:
- You need some special feature that plugins cannot do properly.
- You want a very unique design.
- Speed and performance is very important for you.
- You are planning to grow big and need full control.
- Your business is a web application or a platform (like a portal, booking system, etc).
And if you are still confused, my suggestion is simple. If you are a small business and just starting online, then go for WordPress. Once your business grows and you need more things, then you can move to custom later. Many people make the mistake of spending too much on a custom website before even getting the first customer.
One more important thing. Whether you choose WordPress or custom, the website should be fast, mobile friendly and have a clear call to action. If these basic things are missing, then even the best website will not get you any enquiries. I have written about it in my previous post, so make sure you read that too.
This may not be the complete comparison, something may I missed to add in it. So if you have any question or suggestion, feel free to write them in the comment section.
